2003 Brezovo Cultural Meetings - Ilinden to Be Marked in Brezovo Too

Zivko A. Popovski
(Utrinski Vesnik, 31.07.2003) - 2003 Brezovo Cultural Meetings were first organized last year and the tradition is continuing this year. On August 2, Brezovo will be the venue of the second Brezovo Cultural Meetings. The idea of such an event came from Zivko A. Popovski, fine artist who comes from this village, and as he says, the aim is to revive this part of Macedonia, preserve the tradition and memory of Jordan Piperkata and the vojvodas who came from Brezovo. There are numerous stories and legends about this area and a number of historical events that took place here and of people who have been sung off in folk poetry and should not be forgotten. The cultural meetings have really revived Brezovo and I think such events should be organized in a wider scope. I recently visited Galicnik, at the time the Galicnik Wedding was being organized and I understood that Macedonia has a great spiritual heritage which we should cherish. A special event during last year’s meetings was the view of 1,000 people gathered from the surrounding villages and Demir Hisar, Bitola, Prilep, Kicevo, Ohrid, Skopje, FR Yugoslavia, Germany, Sweden, Australia, United States and other countries, who come from this area. The event is a reason more for these people to return to their native land which they left long ago. A special event for the youth was a show of Brezovo folk costumes and performance of many music groups with folk compositions typical for Brezovo being performed.
As for this year’s programme, Popovski says it will take place within the events marking the 100th Anniversary of Ilinden Uprising. “The event will ceremonially open on August 2 and we are thus joining the jubilee 100 Years of Ilinden Uprising. Wreaths will first be laid on the tombs of fallen fighters in the Ilinden Uprising and People’s Liberation Struggle during World War II followed by the opening of my exhibition “Flower of Peace,” a permanent exhibition that be displayed in my home in the village of Brezovo. Memorial plaques to Brezovo vojvodas Sotir Vojvoda, Nikola Vrba and Kostadin Vojvodata-Kapidanot will be installed in their homes. The programme includes an ethnological exhibition, book promotions, show of folk costumes, lime making evening, art colony, a festival of folk humour, monodrama evening and many other activities. Two publications: “Brezovo: Biography of Rock and Flower” by Trajan Martinovski (promoter Ferid Muhic) and “Monograph: Brezovo Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” published with the financial support by the Ministry of Defense, will be promoted. We are expecting Minister of Defense Vlado Buckovski to attend the ceremonial part of the event. Another novelty is a round table on Ilinden which we have conceived as presentation of testimonies, professional statements and memories about vojvodas in this area. Their descendants and people who have indirectly learned about the events at the time will take part in the table. Many artists in the country and neighbouring countries will take part in an art colony entitled “Brezovo and Jordan Piperkata, Inspiration for Painters”. Ivan Knezevic, Stavre Dimitrov, Zorana Miladinovic, Vasilka Cvetkovska, Ratko Najdovski, Nikola Kricev, Goce Krstevski, Dijana Cvetkovska and others are amongst the artists taking part in the colony. The works make during the colony will be presented in an exhibition that will be organized at the end of the event. A festival, VrbaFest, intended to entertain guests, will be organized for the first time in memory of Mito Vrba, a Brezovo local who was a famous joke teller and mocker. A number of locals and guests from surrounding villages will take part in the festival along with Vojce Kitanovski, a famous Macedonian humorist. Amongst other activities, I will mention an ethnological exhibition displaying tools, items and costumes of Brezovo locals; a lime making evening which is becoming traditional after last year; “At the peak trails of Jordan Piperkata,” a mountain march where the participants will tread a part of the way the military unit of this vojvoda passed; and an evening dedicated to Jordan Piperkata through folk songs with participation of a number of music groups, Popovski said
