101st Anniversary from Ilinden Uprising – House of Famous Smilevo Congress Resurrected
(Dnevnik, 07.05.2004) - A Memorial Museum will be opened at the spot where the famous Smilevo Congress, which passed the decision for beginning of the Ilinden Uprising, was held.
The construction began in October 2003, upon the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, while the cornerstone was laid in the framework of manifestation “100 Years of Ilinden” on August 1.
“The original object was destroyed when the entire Smilevo was burnt after the uprising. The present building is a stylized town house, in which the spirit of the old mijak architecture that was characteristic for the villages in that region has been merged with the contemporary requests and shapes that are necessary for functioning of a museum. The house has been set up at a state-owned land, at the spot of the old textile factory and the old Smilevo Home of Culture”, architect Mirjana Colovic stated.
The Memorial Museum has four rooms, the first of which is dedicated to the Smilevo Congress. The room interior and the furniture have been prepared according to photographs and items from the Ilinden period. The second room is a commemorative room of Dame Gruev, the third is dedicated to ASNOM, while the fourth is a small ethnological museum.
The Memorial Museum will be opened on Friday, May 7, the day when the Smilevo Congress ended.
